Tōhoku Japanese Earthquake Sculpture by Luke Jerram

About the piece:

This sculpture was made to contemplate the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. To create the sculpture a seismogram of the earthquake, was rotated using computer aided design and then printed in 3 dimensions using rapid prototyping technology. The artwork measures 30cm x 20cm and represents 9 minutes of the earthquake.

Look for it soon at the Jerwood Space in London for a show called Terra. The show will also include his fantastic virus sculptures.

We’ve seen a lot of scary videos of this month’s deadly Japanese earthquake and tsunami — but nothing like this. Watch as the waves ravage the port of Kesennuma, destroying everything in it’s path.

First watch as the tsunami begins by tossing cars around like toys at the port parking lot — and then watch how terrifyingly fast the rest of the city becomes enveloped in water. In the end, only a couple of buildings survive.

Holy shit.

That is absolutely horrifying.

This makes the shots they show on a loop on CNN look like the fucking Disney Channel. You can literally see this entire town get swept away before your eyes.

Listen to the Japan earthquakes.

According to Dangerous Minds, this is what they sounded like:

“Audio sonification of the incredible seismic activity off the coast of Honshu, Japan - Friday March 11th. Tectonic is a realtime seismic analysis and sound synthesis system. Sound is created in realtime by earthquakes as they occur across the globe. A tightly integrated system between Max/MSP, Google Earth and Symbolic Sound’s Kyma processes earthquake data that is translated into sound synthesis parameters.”

The harmonic, rhythmic shifts are especially haunting/scary at 1:20, 1:50, 3:00, and 5:20.
