Shale gas protest turns violent in Rexton
At least four RCMP vehicles set ablaze after police use pepper-spray on protesters
At least four RCMP vehicles have been set ablaze this afternoon on Route 134 in Rexton amid anti-shale gas protests in the community.
News 91.9′s Jason Chevrier is on the scene this afternoon.
Chevrier says tensions escalated shortly before 1:30pm after word several members of Elsibogtog First Nation were arrested.
Police used pepper spray against anti-shale protesters and at least one man was arrested.
Protesters dispersed and allegedly set up to four RCMP vehicles ablaze near the Rexton village line.
Plumes of thick, black smoke can be spotted and Chevrier says fire trucks have been having difficulty getting to the fires and they have essentially burned themselves out.
For safety reasons, all three schools in Rexton have been closed today and students have been sent home.
